Christmas Traditions in the Netherlands

Our adventure today was finding an English speaking Catholic Church! We attended mass at the Parish of the Blessed Trinity a few miles from our apartment. It was much smaller than what we're used to at St. Agatha's, St. Elizabeth's, or Our Lady of Grace but you couldn't deny their strong sense of community.

Since arriving in the Netherlands, Connor and I have had a great time, but a lot of things have been unfamiliar. Everywhere we go we hear the Dutch language or see it in ads. We take a bus ride or walk down the street and we can't read the signs (and can't use google maps because we don't have service!) While everyone has been nice and friendly, everything has been foreign to us, from tipping policies to fashion to labels at the grocery store.  But today was different. After we took our seats, sort of hidden in the last pew, not wanting to intrude or to offend anyone unintentionally, the music started. For the first time we felt something familiar! The words hadn't started yet but we both knew the hymn immediately. It was comforting to finally know the right responses and be some place that reminded us of home.

So unfortunately for us, we missed the major Christmas celebrations here. You're about to experience an overload of "fun facts with Lauren" so get ready (or just scroll past the rest of this!) Sinterklaas, who is based off of Saint Nicholas, is celebrated with gift giving on December 5th, the night before Saint Nicholas Day, and on the morning of December 6th, Saint Nicholas Day itself.

Sinterklaas is described as, "an elderly, stately and serious man with white hair and a long, full beard. He wears a long red cape or chasuble over a traditional white bishop's alb. He holds a gold-colored crosier, a long ceremonial shepherd's staff with a fancy curled top." He traditionally rides a white horse names Amerigo.  Sinterklaas carries a big, red book called The Book of Sinterklaas, in which is written whether each child has been good or naughty in the past year. So he is very similar to Santa Claus with which we are familiar!

Sinterklaas is often portrayed with controversial companions.  Instead of the elves that we are used to, he has helpers called Zwarte Piet (plural Zwarte Pieten) who are usually portrayed by a man in blackface with black curly hair, dressed up like a 17th-century page in colorful attire, often sporting a lace collar and a feathered cap. Traditionally Zwarte Piet's face is said to be black because he is a Moor from Spain. Today, some prefer to say that his face is blackened with soot because he has to climb through chimneys to deliver gifts for Sinterklaas.

Naturally, Zwarte Piet is considered by some to be racist. Because of this, the traditions surrounding the holiday of Sinterklaas have been the subject of numerous editorials, debates, documentaries, protests and even violent clashes at festivals. Nevertheless, both Zwarte Piet and the holiday remain popular in the Netherlands. In a 2013 survey, 92% of the Dutch public did not perceive Zwarte Piet as racist or associate him with slavery, and 91% were opposed to altering the character's appearance. When I read this, all I could think of was the episode of The Office where Dwight has Nate dress up like this too, but recognizes that it probably wasn't the best idea! (Season 9 episode 9)

We were talking to a man we met a few nights ago and he was telling us how typically before December 5th, you pick a name out of a hat and then have to buy them an anonymous gift, similar to Secret Santa. However, when you wrap it up, you must disguise in the most elaborate way possible, such as using paper mache to make it look like something totally different. You also must come up with a clever rhyme or song that goes along with it and incorporates Saint Nicholas in some way.

We're hoping to start our own Christmas traditions this year, but we would love any video chats from family and friends from home!

Canal Tour

Yesterday Connor and I went on a tour of Amsterdam by canal boat! They gave everyone headphones and you sat at a table that they were able to plug into which was neat because you could choose the language of your choice for the tour!

We rode past a few museums and other cool parts of the city that we hope to visit soon!

Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch of the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg, which was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great.  The museum here has two permanent presentations, one that describes Netherlands–Russia relations and the other that details the history of the building. Temporary exhibitions usually are scheduled for six-months.  Currently, the exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age is on display.

Where the Dutch Opera and Ballet perform!

The "EYE" is a film institute that serves as both archive and museum that preserves and presents both Dutch and foreign films screened in the Netherlands.

The Amsterdam was an 18th-century cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company, but was wrecked in a storm in 1749. This replica can be found outside the Maritime Museum (we walked past this the other day so I don't wanna bore you with more pictures. Besides, what could be less boring that pictures of a replica of a ship from 1749??)

Hortus Botanicus is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world!

Amsterdam, which is famous for its tulips, unsurprisingly has a museum dedicated to them! The Tulip Museum, which is opposite the Anne Frank House, was opened in 2004 and showcases the history of the beautiful flower.

Amsterdam is famous for the many artists that emerged here. So it is unsurprising that there is a lot of art that can be found in the streets, as well as the canals. Keep in mind though that there is the Light Festival going on right now, so many of these pieces were meant to be seen in the dark.

The original owner of this home was fascinated by Greek and Roman mythology. It may be hard to see, but he has many of the gods displayed on this roof!

This bridge was featured in a James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever. Check out the scene here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbUXN8u4Mko

We've seen this a ton! Hopefully electric cars make their way to the US!

It's kinda hard to see, but when you ride past this bridge, you can see 6 others in the distance! Connor teases me because I like numbers and statistics.  He likes to call it, "fun facts with Lauren!" So today's "fun fact with Lauren" is that Amsterdam has 1,281 bridges, which is 3 times as many as Venice! (Also if any of you talk to him, tell him how fun you think my statistics are!)

PS Connor and I are beyond excited because we got to see Star Wars today, two days before it comes out in the US!!! We won't give away any spoilers, but we really enjoyed it! It was also fun going to a Dutch movie theater. The movie was, thank God, in English, but had Dutch subtitles. The ads beforehand were mainly in Dutch, but weren't just trailers for new movies. Instead they were basically just commercials. They had them for Subway and N espresso! They also had a bit of nudity which I wasn't expecting but I think the pair of 11 year old boys behind us appreciated!

Wandering

Today we went exploring though the streets of Amsterdam! Our apartment is a little less than 2 miles from Central Station so we decided to walk there and check out little shops and the canals along the way...

The little car is so cutie!

We walked past a lot of nautical themed attractions...

Het Scheepvaartmuseum, or the National Maritime Museum is just around the corner from us! The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artifacts associated with shipping and sailing. The collection contains paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps

We found Nemo! It is a Science Museum that has five floors of hands-on science exhibitions that was built in 1923.

There's so much to do around Central Station! Right now Amsterdam is participating in their annual Festival of Light! The city looks beautiful all lit up. We're hoping to take a canal cruise tomorrow to take a better look. We went tonight and missed the last tour by 3 minutes!

One thing so far that I've found frustrating is the above ground trolley system.  Bikes are everywhere and they can be very aggressive if you get in their way. There's also cars everywhere too so throw trolleys into the mix and I feel like I have to look every which way before I even take a step! The one problem between Connor and me is that the Bostonian in me comes out when crossing the street and you have to be out of your mind if you think I'm going to wait for a walk signal! I think Connor is convinced I'm going to have us deported for jaywalking! I'm going to have to work on that...

I don't know if the picture is clear enough, but the lights at the top of the building say "Jesus loves you."  We thought this was strange because the Netherlands is not really known for being religious, particularly as a quarter of the population claim to be Atheist. So naturally we found this to be a pleasant surprise, especially because it was next to a church!

Having a grocery store just around the corner from us makes eating in a lot easier! We're just having a a little trouble because all of the labels are in Dutch! We really lucked out having so much so close to us!

Connor found a familiar name when picking out wine!

(It's called Norton if you can't tell!)

Adventure Part 1

Hi everyone,

We arrived in Amsterdam yesterday and everything has been great so far!  We love the apartment that we rented through Air BnB, here is an excessive amount of pictures:

We're a little jet lagged but we're starting to get used to the time difference.  It's a little difficult with everything being written in Dutch but everyone is helpful and friendly and speaks English very well.  It looks like there are a bunch of cool things to go see around where we live so we will post more we we see them!

Preparing for our trip by taking a walk down memory lane...

July '12 and February '14 we rocked the clogs and Lenderhosen to be part of Team Netherlands!
